Dance Has Evolved. Has the Way We Train Dancers?

Dance demands extraordinary physical capabilities, yet much of how we train dancers continues to be shaped by tradition rather than scientific evidence.

I'm Ashley Grottoli — an applied sport scientist, researcher, strength and conditioning coach and educator with 30 years of international dance teaching experience.

I've spent three decades teaching dancers around the world. Now, I'm bringing that experience together with advanced scientific education and research to ask bigger questions about how we train, develop and protect dancers.

What does the science actually tell us? Are we developing skills or simply repeating movements? Are our training methods effective, or have we just been doing them for generations?

The Dance Scientist is where I challenge assumptions, explore the research and turn science into practical knowledge for the dance industry.

From biomechanics and strength and conditioning to skill acquisition, physical development and training methodology, I make the science of dance accessible through research, infographics, educational resources and literature.

Science-Based Infographics for Every Aspect of Dance Training

Understanding research takes years of study and experience. From identifying high-quality research in dance and other scientific disciplines to connecting vast amounts of information, interpreting findings and translating evidence into practical training applications, the process is complex.

My infographics do the hard work for you, breaking down scientific research into clear, accessible insights that help you and your dancers understand the science behind what we do, how we do it and, most importantly, why.

The Dance Blog: Questioning Dance Through Science

No topic is off-limits. My blog takes an open, objective and scientifically informed look at the dance industry, combining current research, critical thinking and a healthy dose of expert insight to challenge assumptions and spark meaningful conversations.
